Earthquakes are notoriously hard to predict, though modern technology like ShakeAlert* brings us closer every day. Living in Cascadia and the “Ring of Fire” (the seismically active ring of tectonic plate boundaries in the Pacific), we should always be ready for the next quake.
Do you know the Seven Steps of Safety for Earthquakes?
PREPARE
Step 1: Secure Your Space
Step 2: Plan to Be Safe
Step 3: Organize Emergency Supplies
Step 4: Minimize Financial Hardship
SURVIVE
Step 5: Drop, Cover, and Hold On
Step 6: Improve Safety
RECOVER
Step 7: Reconnect and Restore
This August, we’re focusing on SURVIVE - STEP 5 “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.”
Running outside, standing in a doorway, or the "triangle of life" are dangerous or outdated recommendations. "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" may seem like simple steps, but they can be the difference between minor or major injuries. They may even mean the difference between life and death. So, learn the maneuvers and practice often!
You must learn to immediately protect yourself after the first jolt… don’t wait to see if the earthquake shaking is strong.
In most situations, if you feel shaking or get an earthquake alert, immediately:
DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees. This position protects you from being knocked down and reduces your chances of being hit by falling or flying objects.
COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand.
· If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath for shelter.
· If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall.
· Stay on your knees; bend over to protect vital organs.
HOLD ON until the shaking stops.
Under Shelter: Hold on to it with one hand; be ready to move with your shelter if it shifts.
No Shelter: Hold on to your head and neck with both arms and hands.
Or Adapt to Your Situation. If you have difficulty getting onto the ground, or cannot get back up again without help, then follow these recommendations:
If you use a cane: DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON or sit on a chair, bed, etc. and cover your head and neck with both hands. Keep your cane near you so it can be used when the shaking stops.
If you use a walker or wheelchair: LOCK your wheels (if applicable). If using a walker carefully get as low as possible. Bend over and COVER your head/neck with your arms, a book, or a pillow. Then HOLD ON until the shaking stops.
BE PREPARED WHEREVER YOU ARE: Develop a plan and a disaster supply kit. When you’re prepared, you feel more in control and better able to keep yourself and your family safe.
