Towing another vessel side-by-side, commonly referred to as “hip towing” or “alongside towing”, is often the safest and most effective method for maneuvering a disabled boat in tight quarters, congested waterways, or crowded marinas. When properly secured, the two vessels operate as a single, highly maneuverable unit, allowing for greater control during docking and navigation.

Because alongside towing is a complex maritime operation, if performed incorrectly, the maneuver can result in hull damage, personal injury or loss of vessel control. Success requires careful coordination, technical skill, and ongoing training.

We appreciate West Pierce Fire & Rescue for inviting Marine Unit M279 to participate in this valuable hands-on training opportunity.
